F.A.Q. - WHAT IS VERTICAL DANCE

What is Vertical Dance?

Vertical dance is a performance art that combines contemporary dance, aerial movement, climbing techniques, and harness-based choreography. Performers dance on walls, buildings, stages, or suspended structures using ropes and specialist rigging to create movement that challenges gravity and perspective.

What does Hedydd do?

Hedydd creates contemporary dance and vertical dance performances, workshops, and creative projects. The company works with communities, schools, artists, and public spaces to create inclusive and visually engaging experiences through movement and storytelling.

Can anyone do Vertical Dance?

Yes. Vertical dance can be adapted for many different ages, abilities, and experience levels. You do not need to be a professional dancer or climber to take part. Many people try vertical dance for the first time through workshops, community projects, or beginner sessions.

Is Vertical Dance safe?

Yes. Vertical dance uses professional safety equipment including harnesses, ropes and industry-standard rigging systems. Performances and workshops are carefully planned and led by trained professionals with safety procedures in place.

Where can Vertical Dance be done?

Vertical dance can be performed in a much wider range of locations that often expected. To date, Hedydd's dancers have performed on skyscrapers, castles, columns, cliffs, trees, rocks, inside and outside of buildings, theatres, stages and more...

Do participants need dance experience?

No. Many workshops and participation projects are designed for beginners and people with no previous dance experience. Sessions can be adapted for different ages, confidence levels, and physical abilities.

What age groups can take part in workshops?

Workshops can often be tailored for children (6+), young people, adults, schools, colleges, community groups, and mixed-age participants. Activities are adapted depending on the group and the project goals.

What types of workshops does Hedydd offer?

Workshops may include contemporary dance, creative movement, vertical dance techniques, teamwork activities, performance-making, inclusive arts projects, and site-specific creative experiences. Sessions can support creativity, confidence-building, communication, and collaboration.

Can Hedydd perform at festivals, schools, or public events?

Yes. The company can create performances and participatory projects for festivals, schools, theatres, outdoor events, community celebrations, and cultural programmes. Performances can be adapted for different venues and audiences.

Where is Hedydd based?

Hedydd is based in North Wales.

How do you book a workshop or performance?

You can get in touch by email to discuss performances, workshops, collaborations, artist talks, or community projects.

What makes vertical dance different from aerial dance?

Vertical dance focuses specifically on movement across vertical or angled surfaces such as walls and buildings as well as in free space with the dancer suspended in a harness. Aerial dance, for example silks, hoops, or trapeze requires the dancer to hold on to their aparatus. Vertical dance combines choreography with architecture and spatial exploration.
